Bob Spence Introduction

While “Service above self” is Rotary’s moto, it has been written that “the 4-way Test is the linchpin of ROTARY International’s ethical practice.”

The Constitution of Knowledge: A DEFENCE OF TRUTH

As I was reading this book, I kept thinking about Herbert Taylor’s 4-way Test, the exam, or quiz, he authored in 1932. In the ‘current moment’ of the Ukrainian war, we are reminded of the era in 1943 (WWII) – when Rotary adopted Taylor’s 4-way Test. In present-day, “truth - veracity” – the very essence of character – is in peril, and when conspiracies and devious propaganda undermine democracies around the world – what could be more important than TRUTH? Every citizen, each of us as Rotarians share in the responsibility for TRUTH – as we repetitively inquire of these four questions weekly. So, I thought, maybe we could replenish, or gain some new insight, to what it means to live within, to affirm these questions of Truth – Fairness – Goodwill and Better Friendships – Beneficence; to give these attributes some mussel, apply some critical thought. To do that I could think of only one person who could deliver: the intellect – Bob Spence! So, I asked him to read The Constitution of Knowledge, to prepare for this program.

Bob operates one of the the oldest law firms, if not the oldest, in Smithfield, NC. He is a former president of the Smithfield Rotary Club and A Sunday school teacher at Centenary United Methodist Church.
